Driver ID’d in fatal Auburn crash that killed pedestrian: He was speeding and high, police say in update

A woman was fatally struck by a car while crossing the street at North and Lansing in Auburn on Thursday afternoon. The incident, which was reported last week occurred at approximately 1:28 p.m., has resulted in the arrest of the driver, identified as Christopher Dewitt.

According to the Auburn Police Department, Dewitt was driving a mid-sized sedan southbound on North Street at a high speed when he failed to stop at a red light. The vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and struck the victim, who was using the crosswalk. The pedestrian, whose name has not yet been released, died as a result of her injuries.

Officers were assisted at the scene by the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office and the Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office.

The Auburn Police Department is urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Detective Atkins at 315-255-4703 or via email at [email protected].
