North Hornell residents overwhelmingly voted against a $683,000 proposition to purchase a new fire rescue pumper truck, with 111 voting no and 56 in favor. The measure would have raised property taxes by over 23%, adding $108 annually per $100,000 of property value.
The fire department aimed to replace its aging Engine 85, which has incurred nearly $40,000 in repair costs and faces an additional $53,000 overhaul. The proposal included financing $648,000 through bonds and using $35,000 from reserves.
With the rejection, village officials, including Mayor Joseph Ingalls, face uncertainty about whether to repair or replace the aging vehicle. Further discussions are planned to determine the next steps.
