Driver hospitalized after box truck overturns in Ontario County; Rt. 247 temporarily closed

A 71-year-old Rochester man was hospitalized Tuesday afternoon after his box truck overturned on State Route 247 near Phelps Road amid poor weather conditions, according to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office.

Jeffrey Manard, of Rochester was operating a 2021 Mack box truck northbound around 1 p.m. when strong wind gusts pushed the empty truck off the roadway. Authorities said Manard was traveling cautiously due to slippery roads when the truck was forced sideways, struck a utility pole, and overturned.

Manard was briefly trapped inside the vehicle before being successfully extricated by the Rushville Fire Department. He was transported by Middlesex Ambulance to a nearby hospital with crush-related injuries to his legs. Officials reported his condition as stable.

State Route 247 was temporarily closed between Phelps Road and State Route 245 while crews investigated and cleared the crash site.

The incident remains under investigation by the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from Middlesex Ambulance and the Rushville Fire Department.
