Tensions have emerged in Seneca Falls following a recent Town Board decision to establish a Department of Public Works, with concerns raised over resource allocation and interdepartmental collaboration.
In a 3-2 vote, the Town Board approved the creation of the DPW, resulting in four full-time employees being transferred from Jeremy Wendt’s department, leaving him with only two staff members. Wendt expressed frustration over the changes, stating that the initial agreements and budget discussed during workshops have not been honored.
Wendt cited a specific issue regarding the scheduled pickup of over 200 Christmas trees across town. When he reached out to the DPW Superintendent for assistance, his request was denied. A follow-up call to Town Supervisor Schmitter revealed that DPW assistance would only be provided during snow-related tasks.
“This is not what was explained to fellow board members, myself, or the community,” Wendt said in a public statement. “How is it reasonable to assume that the needs of our community can be met when I am met with resistance?”
Wendt acknowledged the efforts of some board members who are striving to prioritize the community’s needs but highlighted obstacles such as “bullying and unprofessionalism” as ongoing challenges.
Residents with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact Jeremy Wendt directly at [email protected] or by calling 315-730-6863.
The situation underscores ongoing tensions surrounding the transition to the new DPW structure and the challenges of balancing responsibilities across departments.
