NYSEG and RG&E surpass one million smart meter upgrades across New York

New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) announced Monday they have surpassed one million smart meter upgrades across the state, marking a major milestone in modernizing New York’s energy infrastructure.

The initiative, which began in fall 2022, aims to upgrade nearly 1.3 million electric and 600,000 gas meters across all 17 NYSEG and RG&E divisions by its conclusion.

Patricia Nilsen, president and CEO of NYSEG and RG&E, praised the efforts behind the achievement. “One million smart meters is quite an accomplishment,” Nilsen said. “Our field crews and in-house teams have worked around the clock to bring these benefits to our customers. We have said from the start that smart meters are a game changer, and we’re now seeing their impact improve our service.”

Smart meters utilize two-way wireless communication to automatically and securely transmit real-time usage data, eliminating the need for manual readings or estimates. The technology offers benefits such as more accurate monthly billing, quicker outage response, and remote connection and disconnection capabilities, which have already facilitated 30,000 remote transactions and reduced crew dispatches by 57,000.

Customers can also access detailed energy consumption data through the Energy Manager platform, allowing them to monitor their monthly, daily, and even hourly energy usage.

The statewide smart meter rollout remains on track, with NYSEG and RG&E continuing installations to meet the project’s completion goals.
