House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) secured reelection on the first ballot after overcoming a brief Republican revolt during Friday’s vote.
Initially, three GOP members opposed Johnson, but Reps. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) and Keith Self (R-Texas) switched their votes after discussions with President-elect Donald Trump. Johnson’s promises of spending reforms and committee oversight helped secure support from hesitant Republicans.
Despite Trump’s backing, Johnson’s challenges highlight ongoing divisions within the GOP, raising concerns about future legislative gridlock over spending and bipartisan negotiations.
