Americans are turning to a wider mix of sources for breaking news, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.
The data shows a decline in reliance on traditional news organizations compared to previous years.
The survey found 36% of U.S. adults go first to a preferred news organization when seeking information about breaking news.
Another 28% turn to search engines, while 19% rely on social media as their first source.
In 2018, a majority of Americans, 54%, said they first turned to news organizations.
The report also found age differences, with older adults more likely to rely on traditional news outlets and younger adults more likely to use social media.
Just 1% of respondents said they turn first to AI chatbots for breaking news information.
Pew Research Center reported, “When a breaking news event happens, 36% of U.S. adults say they typically turn first to their preferred news organization to get more information.”
