North Hornell voters to decide on $683K fire truck purchase

North Hornell residents will vote on Jan. 6 to approve spending $683,000 for a new 2024 Spartan FC-94 Rescue pumper truck, replacing the aging 2002 Engine 85. The village plans to borrow up to $648,000 through a 15-year bond, using $35,000 from reserves to cover the rest.

If approved, taxpayers will see an annual property tax increase, with a $100,000 home paying about $108 more per year. Officials argue maintaining the old truck is no longer cost-effective, with repairs exceeding $37,000 in recent years.

Mayor Joseph Ingalls and Fire Chief Mike Robbins stress the need for reliable equipment to ensure public safety. If rejected, further repairs will cost around $53,000, prolonging reliance on a 23-year-old vehicle.
