The New York State Department of State has awarded nearly $20 million to support community planning, environmental revitalization, and economic development projects across the state, with significant funding directed toward Seneca, Cayuga, Wayne, Yates, Ontario, and Schuyler counties.
The grants, part of Round XIV of the Regional Economic Development Council Initiative, are aimed at redeveloping brownfields, improving waterfronts, and promoting smart growth principles.
In Seneca County, multiple projects received funding, including $5.3 million for the Town of Fayette Sanitary Sewer Collection System to reduce phosphorus entering Cayuga Lake. The Village of Interlaken secured $7.4 million for a new wastewater treatment plant, while the Seneca Falls Bayard Culvert Project received $1 million to address flooding risks. Additionally, $3.9 million was awarded to upgrade the Willard Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Cayuga County was awarded $103,500 for its Smart Growth Comprehensive Plan, which will focus on affordable housing, tourism, and natural resource conservation. The City of Auburn also received $90,000 for a similar Smart Growth initiative.
In Wayne County, $118,028 was granted to the Wayne County Soil and Water Conservation District for a Canandaigua Outlet Streambank Stabilization Project. The Town of Macedon received $162,000 for pre-development activities to support mixed-use development and revitalization of its downtown area.
Ontario County emerged as a significant beneficiary, with multiple municipalities and projects receiving funds. The Town of Phelps was awarded nearly $5 million for a Public Sewer System Extension, and $340,000 was allocated for a Roadside Stabilization Program. The City of Canandaigua received $127,500 for the Sucker Brook Water Quality and Flood Resiliency Strategic Plan, while the Ontario County Soil and Water Conservation District secured $250,000 for Road Salt Reduction Initiatives.
In Yates County, the Western New York Land Conservancy received $1.1 million to acquire and protect the Yates Lakeshore Preserve, safeguarding drinking water and preserving natural landscapes.
While no specific projects were listed for Schuyler County in the available details, the county remains an eligible region for upcoming allocations under the Environmental Protection Fund.
New York State Secretary of State Walter T. Mosley praised the awards, stating, “These programs are fueling community revitalization across every corner of our state, empowering local governments to address pressing infrastructure and environmental needs while fostering long-term economic growth.”
