A state board has recommended the First Presbyterian Church of Springport in Union Springs for the National Register of Historic Places. Already added to the state register, the nomination will now be reviewed by the National Park Service.
The Greek Revival church, designed by local architect John Hagaman and built by Farrand Kitchell in 1840, served the community until 1968. The building, which now houses the Frontenac Historical Society and Museum, remains largely unaltered and retains its historical integrity. The national designation would make it eligible for federal tax credits and state grants for rehabilitation.
The church is one of 14 sites nominated, including Syracuse’s Westcott-University Neighborhood Historic District. New York has over 126,000 properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
