Jessica Tisch appointed NYPD commissioner in surprise move

Mayor Eric Adams has named Jessica Tisch as the new commissioner of the NYPD, making her the second woman to lead the nation’s largest police force. Tisch, previously the city’s Sanitation Commissioner, has never served as a police officer but brings over a decade of experience as a civilian deputy commissioner of information technology at the NYPD.

Her appointment follows a tumultuous period marked by FBI investigations into former commissioner Edward Caban and his interim replacement, Thomas Donlon. Adams emphasized Tisch’s technological expertise and vision for modernizing policing, aligning with his push for high-tech solutions like drones and advanced scanners.

Union reactions were mixed, with rank-and-file officers raising concerns about staffing, while detectives expressed optimism about Tisch’s leadership. “The mission is to keep you safe and improve your quality of life,” Tisch assured New Yorkers as she prepares to begin her new role on Monday.
