A busy start to 2026 for the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office is being defined by expanded training, community engagement and public safety initiatives, according to the agency’s spring newsletter.
Sheriff Timothy Thompson Jr. said the first months of the year have included major milestones, including the recertification of correction officers through an in-house academy and new recruits entering law enforcement training programs.
Among the highlights, the department promoted one member and hired three new personnel during a January swearing-in ceremony. Two deputy sheriffs are currently attending the Finger Lakes Law Enforcement Academy, while several correction officers completed recertification following prior service with New York state.
The Sheriff’s Office also continued investing in public safety education, hosting daycare safety training that included Narcan instruction and partnering with New York State Park Police to deliver a community snowmobile safety course.
Community outreach remained a key focus, with multiple “Community Coffee” events held in Waterloo, Ovid and Seneca Falls, giving residents opportunities to connect directly with deputies and discuss local concerns.
The agency also recognized internal achievements, holding its annual awards ceremony to honor members for service and conduct in 2025, while also celebrating the graduation of seven correction officers from its academy program.
Additional milestones included the department receiving law enforcement reaccreditation from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, underscoring adherence to best practices and operational standards.
Specialized units also saw progress, with a K-9 team earning state recertification in explosives detection, while youth engagement efforts included hosting students from a local employment program for a behind-the-scenes tour of the county jail and law enforcement center.
Looking ahead, the Sheriff’s Office is preparing for seasonal safety efforts, including free boater safety classes required for all vessel operators under state law, as well as participation in upcoming events like Drug Take Back Day, Peace Officer Memorial Day and D.A.R.E. Fun Day.
Officials also cautioned residents to remain vigilant amid an uptick in scams and to use caution on local waterways following high water levels and debris from recent weather.
