House destroyed in Waterloo fire; residents safe, dog missing

A home in the Town of Waterloo was destroyed Wednesday night after a fire tore through the structure while no one was inside. Seneca County Sheriff Timothy Thompson said deputies responded around 8:36 p.m. to 732 State Route 96 and found the residence fully engulfed in flames upon arrival.

Deputies entered portions of the smoke-filled structure that had not yet been overtaken by fire and confirmed no occupants were inside. Authorities said no injuries were reported, but one dog remains unaccounted for.

Multiple fire departments and emergency agencies responded to the scene, including Waterloo, Border City, Geneva, Oaks Corner and Varick fire departments, along with North Seneca Ambulance, state police, the county fire coordinator and the American Red Cross.

Officials said the home was insured but deemed a total loss. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the New York State Fire Investigation Team.
