The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Recreational Safety Division has announced two upcoming snowmobile safety courses for youth operators, aimed at ensuring young riders are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to operate snowmobiles safely on public trails this winter.
The courses, which are required for anyone aged 10 to 17 who plans to operate a snowmobile on public trails, will be held on two dates. The first course is scheduled for November 2 at the Wayne County Fire Training Building in Lyons, and the second on December 21 at Casey Park in Ontario. Both sessions will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Participants must be at least 10 years old by the time of the class and are required to bring a pen and a lunch. A parent or guardian’s signature is also necessary for registration.
Sheriff Robert E. Milby emphasized the importance of this training: “These courses not only help ensure the safety of young snowmobile operators but also promote responsible riding on public trails, helping to prevent accidents during the snowmobile season.”
For parents or guardians interested in registering their child for one of the classes, reservations can be made online through the New York State Snowmobile Safety Course registration portal.
As winter approaches, the Sheriff’s Office hopes to prepare youth riders for a safe season on the trails.
