Netanahu insists on open-ended control of Gaza’s border amid cease-fire talks

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated on Wednesday that Israel must retain indefinite control over Gaza’s border with Egypt, specifically the Philadelphi corridor. This stance has become a significant hurdle in cease-fire negotiations, as Hamas and Egypt push for Israeli withdrawal. Netanyahu emphasized that control over the corridor is essential to prevent Hamas from rearming and repeating attacks like the one on October 7, 2023.

Netanyahu stated that Israeli troops had uncovered tunnels used for smuggling weapons into Gaza, justifying Israel’s hold on the border. He expressed willingness to consider withdrawal only if an alternative force capable of preventing smuggling were introduced.

Families of hostages taken by Hamas have criticized Netanyahu for delaying a potential deal, fearing for their loved ones’ lives. However, Netanyahu defended his position, stating that ensuring Hamas no longer poses a threat to Israel is the top priority. Negotiations for a cease-fire, mediated by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar, remain ongoing.
