Luis Severino turned in one of his worst starts of the season as the New York Mets (57-51) couldn’t complete the three-game sweep of the Minnesota Twins (59-48), falling 8-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Citi Field.
Severino, whose fastball velocity was noticeably down, gave up six runs on six hits in three innings, including two home runs.
Mark Vientos homered for a second straight game, putting the Mets on the board in the second with a two-run blast, his 16th of the season. Francisco Alvarez added a run-scoring groundout in the ninth, but aside from that, the Mets didn’t do much at the plate. They managed six hits, four of which were singles while going 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position and leaving six on base.
Tylor Megill gave up a run in relief of Severino and Phil Maton also surrendered a run.
Brandon Nimmo left the game after fouling a ball off his left foot but said after the game that he had X-rays that came back negative and is day-to-day.
The Mets will get the day off Thursday before beginning a 10-game road trip on Friday in Anaheim against the Los Angeles Angels.
