Harris Teeter Closes In-Store Delis Amid Boar’s Head Listeria Recall

Harris Teeter has temporarily shut down its in-store delis following a recall of Boar’s Head meat products over potential listeria contamination. The regional grocery chain, based in Matthews, announced the precautionary measure on Friday, affecting their “fresh market” delis and halting deli, pizza, and sub orders.

Boar’s Head Provisions Co. Inc., based in Virginia, recalled about 207,500 pounds of deli meats, including liverwurst and other products processed on the same line. The recall was initiated after listeria monocytogenes was detected in a sample by the Maryland Department of Health, which linked the contamination to a multi-state outbreak.

As of July 25, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 34 listeria cases across 13 states, resulting in two deaths and 33 hospitalizations. Harris Teeter has removed the affected products, including liverwurst and various hams, bologna, and salami, from its shelves and urged customers to return any purchased items for a full refund.

Listeriosis, caused by listeria, poses serious risks to pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal distress. Consumers with questions can contact Boar’s Head at 1-800-352-6277.
