The invasive spotted lanternfly has been found near vineyards in the Finger Lakes, worrying local farmers. Officials from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets confirmed the sighting in Romulus, located between Seneca and Cayuga lakes.
The insect, which feeds on grapevines, apple trees, and hops, poses a threat to New York’s agriculture. The department is collaborating with Cornell to survey the area and assess the infestation.
If you find a spotted lanternfly, take a photo, collect a sample, and report it online. The insects, which are not harmful to humans or animals, should be killed if found. For more information, visit the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets website.
