Retail sales steady in June, showing shopper strength

Retail sales remained unchanged from May to June, highlighting consumer resilience amid economic uncertainties. The Commerce Department reported no change after a revised 0.3% increase in May.

Despite overall steady sales, some sectors saw declines. Gas station sales dropped 0.3%, and auto sales fell 0.2%, impacted by a cyberattack on a software supplier. However, excluding gas and auto, sales rose 0.8%.

Online sales increased by 1.9%, and restaurants saw a 0.3% rise. Clothing stores and department stores both reported a 0.6% increase. This steady consumer spending suggests economic strength, despite ongoing challenges and high inflation.
