New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso was looking to join Ken Griffey Jr. as the only three-time Home Run Derby winners in history on Monday night in Arlington, but he didn’t make it past the first round.
Alonso hit just 12 home runs and was the first contestant eliminated.
Philadelphia’s Alec Bohm started off the competition by hitting 20 home runs, Kansas City’s Bobby Witt Jr. hit 20, Texas’s Adolis Garcia went for 18, and Los Angeles’s Teoscar Hernandez deposited 19 over the wall.
This was Alonso’s fifth consecutive Derby appearance. He won it in his first two attempts, in 2019 and 2021, before falling short the past three years.
