Yankees activate Jazz Chisholm Jr. from injured list

The New York Yankees activated Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the 10-day injured list on Tuesday night, bringing the second baseman back after he missed 12 games with a sprained right thumb.

Chisholm returned for the second game of New York’s doubleheader against the Tampa Bay Rays, batting sixth and starting at second base. The Rays entered the night needing a victory to clinch the American League East.

Chisholm landed on the injured list September 10 after hurting his thumb two days earlier against Colorado. He was injured while sliding into second base as he attempted to stretch a single into a double, with his thumb appearing to strike the cleat of Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar.

The 28-year-old has hit .232 with 19 home runs, 55 runs batted in and 40 stolen bases in 49 attempts across 134 games this season. His 40 steals made him the first Yankees player to reach that mark since Brett Gardner stole 49 bases in 2011.

Chisholm was also swinging the bat well before the injury, hitting .391 with two home runs and six runs batted in over his previous 15 games.

While Chisholm was sidelined, Anthony Volpe took over at second base 10 times after returning to the major leagues from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Volpe made an immediate impact with a grand slam and five runs batted in on September 10 and has hit .263 in 11 games since his return.

New York optioned Max Schuemann to the Florida Complex League Yankees to make room for Chisholm on the roster. Schuemann hit .194 with two home runs and eight runs batted in over 43 games with New York this season.
