New York birth complication rates exceed national average: Why?

New data reveals that New York state has higher rates of birth complications after hospital discharge compared to the national average, with significant racial disparities.

An analysis by Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) shows that one-third of birth complications occur within six weeks post-discharge, disproportionately affecting Black patients at a rate 87% higher than white patients. New York leads the nation in these severe maternal morbidity (SMM) events.

Excellus BCBS’s Bright Beginnings program addresses these issues by providing transportation, resources, and mental health support to new parents. Collaborations with community partners aim to improve maternal health outcomes and reduce disparities. For more details, read the full BCBS report here.
