Two injured in Benton crash on State Route 54

A two-car collision Saturday evening in Yates County sent two people to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to local authorities.

Deputies responded to the scene at the intersection of State Route 54 and Pre-Emption Road in the Town of Benton around 5:21 p.m. on July 5. The crash occurred when a vehicle driven by Brian P. Leyde, 37, of Fly Creek, struck the rear of another vehicle attempting to turn north onto Pre-Emption Road. That vehicle was operated by Sydney Spaulding, 30, of Penn Yan.

Leyde and his passenger, 35-year-old Lydia M. Rafferty, also of Fly Creek, sustained chest and wrist injuries and were transported to F.F. Thompson Hospital by Penn Yan Ambulance. Spaulding was treated at the scene and released.

Leyde was issued a citation for following too closely. Additional charges are pending as the investigation continues.

The Yates County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Penn Yan Police Department, Yates County Ambulance, Penn Yan Ambulance, and the Penn Yan Fire Department.
