Customs Facility at Ithaca Airport Faces Financial Struggles

The customs facility at Ithaca-Tompkins International Airport has operated at a loss since it opened. In 2023, it cost about $273,000 to run but earned only $13,000. Airport Director Roxan Noble said they are exploring options for the facility’s future due to these financial issues, according to reporting this week by The Ithaca Voice.

The facility, part of a $24.7 million expansion in 2018, was meant to boost international travel but only served 26 flights in 2023. Noble mentioned that the cost is currently covered by the airport fund balance, but long-term solutions are needed, which might include repurposing the facility.

County officials are considering various funding options, including increasing the hotel occupancy tax, to support the airport.
