The New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) is deciding what to do with the Menard Memorial Bridge, also known as Free Bridge, after failing to find a buyer. The 310-foot bridge, built in 1932, connects Tyre in Seneca County with Montezuma in Cayuga County along 5&20.

In January, the DOT sought a buyer to either rehabilitate and reuse the bridge or salvage it for scrap. Despite efforts, no one came forward. The bridge, which is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, is set for replacement in 2025-26 due to structural deficiencies, according to The Finger Lakes Times.

DOT spokesperson TeNesha Murphy told the FLT that discussions are ongoing with the state Historic Preservation Office, the federal Highway Administration, and the National Park Service to determine the next steps. No timeline has been set.
