Ontario County Sheriff’s firing range nears completion

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office outdoor firing range is undergoing significant upgrades, expected to be completed by July. This project, initiated last September, is partially funded by a $250,000 grant from New York State Senator Pamela Helming through the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY).

The firing range, established in the mid-1970s, serves local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. The current improvements aim to expand capacity, enhance safety, and implement environmental measures. Key upgrades include widening the range from 80 to 120 feet, raising perimeter berms to 15 feet, and installing a bullet collection system. Utilities will also be improved, with better stormwater management, enhanced lighting, and extended sewer and water services.

“These enhancements will ensure our officers are well-trained and certified,” said Senator Helming. Sheriff David J. Cirencione emphasized that the upgrades would create a safer and more efficient training environment for various law enforcement agencies. The total project budget is $1.2 million.
