Yankees hold off Rays to win series

The New York Yankees bounced back with a 5-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium, taking two of three in the series.

The game was tied at one after four innings but New York (15-7) put up a four-spot in the fourth to grab a 5-1 lead before holding on for the win.

Alex Verdugo had a go-ahead two-run single as part of a three-hit day. Anthony Rizzo, Jose Trevino, and Oswaldo Cabrera added run-scoring singles.

Luis Gil struck out a career-high nine batters over 5.2 innings. The right-hander allowed a run on a balk, but it was unearned. Luke Weaver and Victor González combined for 2.1 scoreless frames. Dennis Santana struggled, surrendering three runs in the eighth.
