Puppy found abandoned in Ithaca dumpster: Authorities search for answers

A puppy was found abandoned in a commercial dumpster in Ithaca, according to Tompkins County Animal Control. The puppy, discovered in the 300 block of Lake Street in the Fall Creek area, showed signs of being tied around the muzzle.

The puppy was rescued thanks to the help of a neighborhood dog being walked in the area by its owner. The puppy is now in foster care and officials are urging anyone with information about how the dog ended up in the dumpster to come forward.

Tompkins County Animal Control Officer Lee Consolo told 14850 that they would like to hear from anyone with information or video recordings in the area that could help identify the person responsible.

Animal control officials are reminding the public that there are alternatives to abandoning an animal in a way that could cost the animal its life or cause lasting damage. The SPCA of Tompkins County is available to help county residents with additional resources to help them through a difficult time with their pet. It may also be possible to surrender a pet to the SPCA if there are no other options.

The SPCA of Tompkins County can be reached at 607-257-1822 extension 237 or 607-592-6773, or by email at [email protected].
