Chicago Moves is a program proposed by Mayor Lori Lightfoot. The program was approved by Chicago City Council on April 27. Find additional information here.
The proposal passed, but not by much. The council votes were 26 to 23 in favor of Chicago moves. However, her first proposal didn’t get a vote.
Lightfoot made some minor changes to the plan and the budget committee approved it on April 20, another close call on votes too, 15-12.
Chicago Moves is a financial assistance program to help residents of Chicago that are struggling to pay for transportation expenses. Lightfoot said that this will make Chicago the first and largest major city to do this type of giveaway.
50,000 prepaid $15o gas cards and 100,000 prepaid $50 transit cards will be distributed to eligible residents throughout the city.

Who’s eligible?
To qualify for the gas cards:
- live in Chicago
- be at least 18 years old
- have a current and valid city sticker with correct information
- have a household income at or below 100% of the area median income
75,000 of the transit cards will be given based on geographic data and prioritize low income neighborhoods. The remaining 25,000 cards will be distributed citywide. In order to qualify:
- Chicago resident
- household income at or below 140% of the area median income
How can I apply?
A lottery system will be used to give away the cards. There are three ways to apply:
- Online: Chicago.gov/ChicagoMoves
- In person: at any Chicago Public Library
- Mail: send the completed application to:

The lottery will start the second week of May and go until September. There will be multiple application deadlines for gas cards:
- May 3
- June 3
- July 3
- August 3
- September 3
The deadline to apply for transit cards will be June 3.
Recipients that have been selected for a card will be contacted via email. Instructions will be attached for in person pick-up if you selected that option. If you are not picked in one months drawing, you will automatically be added to the next.
