Patients no longer choose their emergency care in some areas; diversion sends them to any hospital

Hospitals across the state are seeing an increase in patients and longer wait times in the emergency rooms, especially in higher populated areas.

Between the Delta wave that appears to be slowing and the COVID-19 vaccine mandate for healthcare workers, patients in some areas are now being forced to be diverted to a different hospital in an emergency.

Normally if a patient is being diverted to another hospital, they can demand the hospital they want. This is no longer happening due to hospitals reaching full capacity.

This is happening in Syracuse, and the term is “DOH diversion.”

According to CNY Central, it was only supposed to go on during the State Fair, but halfway through October it’s still happening. Patients that have a medical history and trust with specific hospitals and doctors no longer have a say in where they get their care in an emergency.
