The Erie Canal is finally fully opened as of Thursday.
Various issues have occurred this season to diminish the use for boaters.
An embankment collapsed in Macedon, resulting in the water levels being lowered. The only boats that could travel between locks 29 and 30 were ones with a 5 foot draft as they worked on a dam to accommodate larger vessels.
Heavy rainfall in July raised the water level too high, resulting in many sections being closed and boats getting stuck.
The locks between 29 and 30 were the last to reopen, and the waters were being raised Thursday to allow for boats with a 7 foot draft to pass through.
The dam still needs to be finished, and upon completion will allow water levels to be raised more.
