After playing an independent schedule and winning a Class C1 Sectional Title last season, the Marcus Whitman Wildcats boys varsity basketball team joined the Finger Lakes East for the 2020-21 season. One of the questions heading into competition this week was how Coach Greg O’Conner’s Wildcats would fare as the smallest school in one of the toughest leagues traditionally in Section V. Through 3 games and the first week of play Whitman stands alone at 3-0 atop the league standings and appear to be a contender for the league crown. On Saturday in Gorham, senior PG Jordan Lahue hit yet another big three-pointer in the final minute, this time to hand Mynderse Academy their first loss of the season, 53-47.
Whitman will face some stiff competition at the top of the standings as both Wayne and Geneva cruised to 2-0 with wins on Saturday evening.
In a heavy slate of girls games on Saturday, both South Seneca and Dundee/Bradford took early command of the FL West standings while Waterloo and Midlakes both cruised to 2-0 to set up a showdown atop the FL East standings on Monday night.
