RIT men’s hockey falls to Canisius, 5-3

RIT sophomore forward Caleb Moretz (Fairbanks, Alaska) notched a pair of goals, but it was host Canisius defeating the Tigers, 5-3, Friday night at the LECOM Harborcenter.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Canisius caused a turnover at the top of the Tiger zone before junior defenseman Kevin Obssuth finished the ensuing two-on-one break to open the scoring with 10:14 on the clock.

RIT tied the score with 7:06 remaining in the first period. Senior defenseman Dan Willett (Bayville, N.Y.) took a shot from the point that rebounded outside the left post. Senior defenseman Regan Seiferling (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan)collected the loose puck and slipped a pass through a crowd back into the slot for a finish by Moretz.

Canisius scored the first two goals of the second period. Sophomore forward Keaton Mastrodonato fought off a Tiger defenseman to score with 13:55 on the clock before junior forward J.D. Pogue notched a power play goal at 8:59 after RIT was whistled for too many men of the ice.

Moretz scored off his own rebound from outside the right post to bring RIT back within one with 7:38 on the clock but Pogue scored his second of the game off a short rebound to push the Griffins back on top by two, 4-2, with 4:58 left in the second period.

The teams were scoreless until late in the third period when Canisius took a three-goal lead on a tally by Mitchell Martan with 2:53 on the clock.

RIT got one back in the final minute after junior forward Kobe Walker (Lloydminster, Alberta) flipped a puck on goal from the top of the Canisius zone that rebounded to senior forward Alden Dupuis (Edmonton, Alberta) for a short finish in front.
