Governor Kathy Hochul expressed gratitude for Chris Alexander’s work as Executive Director of the New York State Office of Cannabis Management, following his recent departure. Alexander played a key role in developing the Marihuana Regulation & Taxation Act and launching the Office of Cannabis Management, aiming to create a legal market benefiting those affected by past cannabis prohibition.

Earlier this month, Hochul announced an overhaul of the Office of Cannabis Management, citing “deep-seated issues” within the regulatory body. She commended the dedication of public servants involved and emphasized the need for the agency to transition from startup mode to a fully operational regulatory entity with improved internal controls and organizational structure.

Hochul’s priorities for the office include hiring more staff, enhancing transparency in the cannabis license application process, and prioritizing enforcement through a statewide task force led by the New York State Police. The director of enforcement, Daniel Haughney, confirmed the task force is now operational. The new executive director has not yet been named.
