Two structure fires under investigation in Seneca County

A pair of fires in the village of Ovid are suspicious and under investigation, according to deputies.

They happened in Ovid, and occurred less than a week apart, according to the Finger Lakes Times.

“Both fires appear to have started on the front porches of each residence,” Lt. Tim Thompson said. “Based upon the similarity of the fires and the close geographical location to each other, it is believed that they may be connected.”

The more recent fire occurred on West Seneca Street around 10:20 p.m. on Monday. The homeowner’s children were at home during the fire, but were able to escape without injury.

Last Wednesday, a fire was reported around 4 a.m. on Prospect Street. The two roads are near each other in the village.

Thompson said that at the moment the fires are under investigation and that more evidence needs to be examined by the crime lab to determine what is next.

“Sheriff’s investigators are following up on numerous leads and working diligently to determine what caused the fires,” he added to the Times.
