Police investigate Erie Canal drowning in Wayne County

The Macedon Police Department says they are investigating a dead body, which was found in the Erie Canal on Saturday.

That day police were called for the report of a missing 72-year-old on Quaker Road.

The man is said to have left his house in the morning to do some work on his boat, which was docked on the Erie Canal behind the home.

A search unfolded, before the man’s body was eventually recovered around 6:30 p.m. by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Underwater Recovery Unit.

An autopsy will be conducted this week. However, police identified the victim as Robin Mangold. At this point, police say it’s possible Mangold fell off his boat into the canal.
