Sheriff Brian Schenck provided an update around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday about a fatal accident that happened along State Route 31 in the Village of Weedsport around 1:45 p.m.
He says that investigation has shown that a compact tractor was traveling east on the south shoulder of Route 31 when it was struck from behind by a passenger vehicle also traveling east.
The operator of the tractor was ejected and suffered fatal injuries. Sheriff Schenck says that they were pronounced dead at the scene.
The operator of the passenger vehicle fled the scene, according to Schenck. However, they were apprehended a short distance away.
The investigation remains active. Anyone with information is asked to call (315) 253-6562.
Sheriff Schenck described the operator of the passenger vehicle as a suspect in a press release. He said that the individual remains in custody at this time.
The roadway was closed for a long period of time as investigators and other first responders remained on-scene.
