New research shows up to 80 percent of people who struggle with substance abuse also have a mental health diagnosis.
Professionals say it is common for those struggling with substance abuse disorder to experience trauma, anxiety, or depression.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse says only 9 percent of people receive treatment for both. Nearly 53 percent get no treatment at all, according to the agency.
“Mental illness takes different forms, as you know,” Dr. Lyn Conlon, a psychiatrist. “It can be major depression, which can lead to drug abuse. It can be anxiety, which can lead to drug abuse.”
