The National Women’s Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Act of 2019 has been introduced in the House of Representatives.
Tom Reed, R-23 of Corning, and Joe Morelle, D-25 of Fairport, are two of the bill’s four sponsors. Gwen Moore, D-4 of Wisconsin, and Grace Meng, D-6 of Queens, are the others.
The legislation directs the Treasury Department to mint 75,000 commemorative $5 gold coins, 500,000 $1 silver coins and a million 50-cent clad coins. After deducting the Treasury’s production and overhead costs, the remaining proceeds will go to the National Women’s Hall of Fame Foundation to establish an endowment fund ensuring its future operation.
The mining and issuing of the coins will not result in any net cost to the U.S. government.
Seneca Falls is recognized federally as the Birthplace of the Women’s Rights Movement. The Hall of Fame was founded in 1969.
“We are pleased a National Women’s Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Act of 2019 is being brought forward, and we hope it will pass this year as the Hall turns 50,” said Betty Bayer, president of the Hall of Fame Board of Directors. “Commemorative coin funding will build a foundational endowment to realize our vision in our newly rehabilitated 1844 Seneca Knitting Mill as the national center recognizing women who have transformed the landscape of America.”
One of the 10 women chosen for induction in September is late Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, a strong supporter of the Hall of Fame. Morelle was elected to her vacant 25th Congressional District seat in November.
“As the National Women’s Hall of Fame celebrates its 50th anniversary, this legislation will help ensure the longevity of this iconic historical landmark for years to come,” Morelle said. “I am especially pleased that our own Louise Slaughter will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this year and that this legislation will help ensure she and so many other remarkable women in the Hall of Fame will continue to inspire future generations.”
