The Auburn City Council and the public will get a rundown on a plan to expand the South Street Historic District Thursday. City staff are applying for two grants to help fund the district expansion.
The district currently encompasses areas of South Street and the side streets of Elizabeth Street, Fitch Avenue, Grover Street, Hamilton Avenue, MacDougall Street, Swift Street and William Street. Any sort of development that happens within the district boundaries that could change the appearance of a building requires approval from the city’s Historic Resources Review Board to preserve historical significance.
The expansion proposal was presented at a historic review board meeting last week, where members picked apart a plan to nearly double the size of the current district. A revised map of the proposal is expected to be revealed Thursday but no action will be taken. The council will instead likely vote on a resolution at a future meeting that would allow city staff to apply for the grants.
Expanding the historic district would bring Fort Hill Cemetery one step closer to being placed on the National Register of Historic Places — action that the National Parks Service has requested.
