Deadline coming up for seniors to apply for enhanced STAR exemption

The deadline is approaching for senior citizen homeowners in New York state to apply for the enhanced STAR exemption.

The STAR (School Tax Relief) credit is for homeowners who are applying for their primary residence and have an annual income of $500,000 or less.

The Enhanced STAR credit is for senior citizens who meet a qualifying income level.

Senior citizens who want to apply or reapply for the Enhanced STAR exemption should submit multiple forms to their property tax assessor. Those forms are the Form RP-425-IVP, Supplement to Forms RP-425-E and RP-425-Rnw.

If you are applying to upgrade from being the Basic STAR credit to the Enhanced STAR credit, you should also bring the Form RP-425-E and the Application for Enhanced STAR Exemption for the 2019-2020 school year. If you are renewing your application, you will need to bring the Form RP-425-Rnw and the Renewal Application for Enhanced STAR Exemption for the 2019-2020 school year. Proof of income is also required.
