State Police say a 54-year-old man is in critical condition after a two-car crash, which happened at the intersection of Lower Creek Road and Route 13 in Dryden.
Troopers credited Ithaca Police Chief Pete Tyler, who was first on the scene, with saving the man’s life.
The crash happened around 2:40 p.m. Tyler was in the area at the time of the call, and heard it come in over the scanner. Troopers say he was able to get there quickly. While the call came in as a head-on crash with fire – Tyler arrived – noticing that bystanders were frantically waving him over.
The Ithaca Voice reports that the man was still in his car, and that the vehicle had gone into a ditch.

(ID: 28)Tyler, who is also an EMT and volunteer with the Dryden Fire Department, said he was able to stabilize the man’s neck and pull him out of the car with help from a bystander and he started working to get the man breathing, the Voice added. By the time state police arrived, along with the Dryden Ambulance and Verna Fire Department – the man was stabilized.
The man was taken by Dryden Ambulance to the Ithaca airport where he was then flown by helicopter to Upstate Medical Center, where he currently remains in critical condition, state police added.
State Police say the driver of the second vehicle was 24-year-old woman, who was also pregnant. She was transported to Cayuga Medical Center as a precaution.
