Temperatures will reach the 60s across the Finger Lakes and Central New York Friday before rain becomes more widespread tonight and Saturday, according to the National Weather Service offices in Buffalo and Binghamton.
Saturday will bring a noticeable cooldown, with periods of showers continuing into Sunday morning. Some areas could catch a break later Sunday before another system brings additional rain chances Sunday night into Monday.
Limited showers Friday before rain increases tonight
Friday’s rain chances will vary across the region. The Buffalo office expects clouds and scattered showers as a cold front crosses western New York, while forecasters in Binghamton expect a mainly dry day across much of their coverage area. A few light showers could develop later in the afternoon or evening.
Afternoon highs are forecast near 65 degrees in Geneva, Penn Yan and Ithaca, with Syracuse reaching about 66. Rochester will be slightly cooler, near 62, according to the Weather Service’s local temperature outlook.
Rain becomes more likely tonight. Overnight temperatures will fall into the lower to middle 40s across much of the region as cooler air moves in behind the front.
Saturday brings cooler air and frequent showers
An upper-level low moving over Central New York Saturday will bring periods of rain. Moisture circulating around the system, combined with cooler air passing over the Great Lakes, will help keep showers going downwind of the lakes.
Highs will fall to the lower and middle 50s across much of the Finger Lakes. Geneva is forecast to reach about 55, Penn Yan 54 and Ithaca 53. Syracuse will reach roughly 57.
Saturday’s rain chances are around 80% to 90% at those locations. Showers will continue Saturday night, with lows generally in the upper 30s to lower 40s.
Sunday offers a possible break
The Binghamton office expects a lull in shower activity Sunday after lingering morning rain. Lake-enhanced showers could persist east of Lakes Erie and Ontario, however, so the improvement will vary by location.
Temperatures should recover slightly, with afternoon highs generally in the middle to upper 50s.
The Buffalo office also allows for rain to mix with wet snow in interior portions of the western Southern Tier early Sunday morning. That possibility is separate from the mainly rain forecast across the Finger Lakes.
Another system will bring renewed rain chances Sunday night into Monday. Forecasters in Binghamton see a possible quieter stretch developing late Monday through Wednesday before unsettled weather returns toward the end of next week.
