The mother of a Cornell University student who died by suicide in 2024 has sued, accusing the university of failing to intervene in harassment, according to the Times Union.
Sofia Akber filed the federal complaint Oct. 26 over the death of Winter Knutson, a 19-year-old sophomore.
The lawsuit alleges two students spread false accusations about Knutson and that Cornell inadequately supervised its Loving House LGBTQ residential community.
Akber seeks unspecified damages on claims including wrongful death, negligence and discrimination.
Cornell called Knutson’s death a tragedy and declined further comment on the litigation.
