Two Port Byron residents charged after overcrowded-car crash injures five

Two Port Byron residents face child-endangerment charges after deputies said a 6-year-old was not properly seated or restrained in a car that rear-ended a farm tractor in Montezuma, injuring five occupants.

Brittany Winters, 28, and Ronald Wilson II, 50, were charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor, according to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to Route 31 at Mentz Church Road around 6:17 p.m. Oct. 5. They said Wilson was driving a sedan west when it struck the rear of a farm tractor that had stopped to turn left onto Mentz Church Road.

The sedan carried four children younger than 17 and two adults, despite having seats for only five people. Deputies said a 6-year-old was either not secured in a seat or was not properly restrained when the crash occurred.

Five occupants were taken to a hospital for injuries sustained in the crash.

Winters and Wilson turned themselves in at the sheriff’s Public Safety Building on Oct. 21. They were processed and issued appearance tickets for Montezuma Town Court on Nov. 4 at 6 p.m.

Wilson also received tickets for traffic offenses related to the crash.
