Cayuga County forum to examine proposed compensation for volunteer firefighters

A panel discussion in Auburn next month will examine proposed state legislation on nominal compensation for first responders and what it could mean for local volunteer fire departments.

The Cayuga County Fire Advisory Board is sponsoring “Future of the Fire Service,” a panel discussion and open forum scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 23 at Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES, 1879 W. Genesee Street Road, Auburn.

The session will bring together representatives of statewide fire service organizations to explain the proposal, discuss potential effects on local departments and answer questions.

Organizers describe the proposed legislation as a measure that would allow authorities responsible for emergency services to provide nominal compensation to first responders.

The presentation will include a breakdown of the proposal, an explanation of nominal compensation and discussion of how changes could affect local fire departments. Panelists also plan to address common misconceptions and take questions from attendees.

Scheduled panel members are:

  • David Denniston, representing the Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York.
  • Bruce Heberer, representing the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs.
  • Bill Streicher, representing the New York State Fire Coordinators Association.

Organizers say the session is intended to give departments, their leaders and communities direct information from people involved in the process.

The Genoa Volunteer Fire Department shared the event announcement in a Facebook post asking departments to consider whether they have enough active members to support their work and sustain the service their communities need.

The department also encouraged participation by those interested in possible options but unsure how they might fit local circumstances.

“There is no silver bullet, and one size doesn’t fit all, but let’s get the facts and answer your questions,” the department wrote.

All members of the fire service are encouraged to attend. Questions may be submitted in advance to Denniston at ddenniston@afdsny.org.
