Man charged after gunfire near Hopewell home with two young children inside

An Ontario County man was arrested Tuesday after deputies responded to reported gunfire near a Hopewell home where two children younger than 2 were inside, the Ontario County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies were called to 3544 Algerine Street at about 1:12 a.m. and found Charles Johnson, 43, of Canandaigua, with a firearm, according to the sheriff's release.

The sheriff's office said Johnson had been shooting near the residence and that its investigation determined he had a prior felony conviction that barred him from possessing a gun.

Deputies charged Johnson with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Johnson was taken to the Ontario County Jail, where the sheriff's office said he was held without bail.

The New York State Police assisted in the investigation. The release did not provide a court date or further information about the reported shots.
