Four-way stop coming to Route 488 and Freshour Road in Hopewell

Four-way stop coming to Route 488 and Freshour Road in Hopewell

Drivers on state Route 488 will encounter a new four-way stop at Freshour Road in Hopewell beginning Wednesday, Oct. 7.

The state plans to install stop signs in both directions of Route 488, changing the intersection’s traffic pattern as soon as the signs are in place.

The New York State Department of Transportation said the intersection in Ontario County will be reduced to one lane starting at 9 a.m. Wednesday while crews install the new stop and stop-ahead signs. Flaggers will alternate traffic through the work area, and the department expects to finish by the end of the day.

Motorists should expect delays during the installation and consider another route if needed. Once the signs are installed, drivers should use caution while traffic adjusts to the four-way stop, the department said.

The schedule is weather-dependent and could change. State officials reminded drivers to slow down in the work zone; New York doubles fines for work-zone speeding, and two or more work-zone speeding convictions could lead to a driver’s license suspension.

The new stop is a separate change from the shoulder work and temporary Route 488 lane reduction the department scheduled at the same intersection for Oct. 1.
