Cornell men’s soccer generated 36 shots and repeatedly threatened to equalize, but Colgate goalkeeper Gavin Vichengrad turned aside all 11 shots on target to lead the Raiders to a 1-0 victory Tuesday night at Beyer-Small ’76 Field.
Spencer Osborne scored the decisive goal in the 56th minute, converting Colgate’s first shot of the match off an assist from Mateo Colmenares. Cornell goalkeeper Filip Versterre made one save, stopping Colmenares’ attempt in the 70th minute, as the Raiders finished with just three shots overall.
The Big Red had controlled the opening half, recording 15 shots before halftime, but could not find a breakthrough. After falling behind, Cornell nearly answered when Aidan Martin struck the left post in the 58th minute. Liam May hit the crossbar in the 88th, marking another missed opportunity in a match where the Big Red also held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Andrew Miles led Cornell with eight shots, including three on target, all after halftime. Connor Miller put two of his five attempts on goal, while Adam Schaban recorded three shots on target from four attempts.
Cornell pushed aggressively in the closing minutes, with Schaban, Justin Melly and Blake Donahue each getting off a shot in the final two minutes. Vichengrad denied Donahue on the final play to preserve the shutout.
The Big Red return to conference action Saturday, October 17, with a road matchup against Princeton. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
