Cornell soccer erased a two-goal halftime deficit with a dominant second-half performance Saturday, defeating Penn 5-3 at Berman Field to remain unbeaten in Ivy League play.
The Big Red improved to 7-2-1 overall and 3-0 in conference competition after scoring five times following the break. Penn dropped to 4-2-3 overall and 1-1-1 in league action.
Penn controlled much of the opening half, taking a 2-0 lead through goals from Jack-Ryan Jeremiah on a penalty kick in the 35th minute and Michael Howard four minutes later.
Cornell responded quickly after halftime. Calvin Momanyi put the Big Red on the scoreboard in the 55th minute, and Blake Donahue equalized two minutes later. Donahue struck again in the 61st minute, finishing a pass from Connor Miller to give Cornell its first lead.
The Quakers answered in the 64th minute when Romeo Dahlen converted an opportunity created by Becket Empson-Speiden, tying the contest at 3-3.
Cornell regained control late in the match. Kasper Wollstein scored in the 80th minute to put the Big Red ahead 4-3, and Sergio Zapata added an insurance goal in the 88th minute to complete the comeback.
Donahue finished with two goals, while Cornell goalkeeper Filip Versterre made four saves. Penn’s Phillip Falcon III recorded six saves.
The Big Red finished with a 20-14 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Cornell also outshot Penn 11-4 in the second half, generating the pressure needed to turn the match around.
Hobart soccer shuts out Skidmore Cornell returns to action Tuesday, October 13, for a road matchup against Colgate. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
